“My son, aged 9 has several different diagnoses including ASD and ADHD and was receiving an education at a private, highly specialized ABA school in Manhattan. While he had made some improvements, especially in the academic field, his social skills were lacking. He had no friends and was very lonely. His behavior towards me spiraled at home and behavioral interventions, medications just weren’t getting to the root of the problem. As a single mother, I was completely burnt out and didn’t know what to do. My son’s psychiatrist recommended a residential placement and I knew it was the only thing we had not tried. If you're in need of an educational consultant, I first want to say how much I empathize with you. It's the most difficult thing I've ever had to deal with and my life has not been without hardship. Gaby was my second consultant and, after my first experience, my guard was up when I met with her. I had been taken for tens of thousands of dollars by that first consultant, and I did most of the work myself.
Gaby was and still is an integral cog in the proverbial wheel of justice for my child. She doesn't take your money and run. She doesn't charge 'per placement' like others. She has a one-time fee that is very reasonable, and she stays with you from beginning to end no matter how long it takes, which is incredible when I consider how long this has taken.
Gaby fights with everything she has to make sure you understand the process, which is a labyrinth of byzantine laws and bureaucratic nooks and crannies that is dizzying to the average person. Her grasp on this process from a state by state basis is all the more impressive once you've been through it from beginning to end.
My child needed help and that's all that mattered to Gaby. She saw not just a child in need but, because she took the time to ask the right questions, read and understand the mountain of paperwork from various psychiatrists, social workers, and therapists, she saw a child whose vast potential had been forgotten or ignored by his teachers, counselors, and even the principal at his middle school.
It wasn't always easy to work with her. I will say that. She doesn't like the word no and when I thought there was simply no way things would work out financially for my child to attend one of the very few places that would accept them and that could actually help them, it was sometimes frustrating to hear her say "there is a way."
This fight is far from easy and it's one that very few people truly understand so there were many times when I felt helpless and alone and was ready to send my child to the 'next best place' but Gaby's perseverance fueled my own. Her firm belief that my child deserved to be treated by the very best, reignited my own vigor to do whatever it took to help them, and the desired result became the reality everytime. There were, at times, arguments; but, we both kept only the child's needs in mind. Period.
